An art degree program can take as many forms as there are different media for arts. Earning an art degree will teach developing artists how to use their existing talents and develop new skills and techniques that will allow them to express their visions. Making art useful and the ways in which it is used in modern society have both advanced greatly through the rise of new technologies.

Photography, for instance, is a field that has grown by leaps and bounds, both in the technological aspects and in the applications in which the medium has been used. Photography was once a very time-consuming, expensive pursuit involving darkrooms, chemicals, and often-expensive equipment. Industrial design is something of a “new kid on the block” as art programs go. As the need for new, better-designed products has grown, this field has expanded along with it. The discovery and invention of new materials from which to construct products has also helped to fuel the growth of the industrial design field. There is now, more than ever, a need for artistic people to help marry the form and function that make up industrial design.

Writing is perhaps one of the last fields that many think of when considering a degree in the arts, but it serves as a foundation for a number of other art forms, including theater, film, and even animation. An art degree program in writing can actually lead to a multitude of careers in other fields, as well as writing traditional fiction or nonfiction stories.

Drawing is perhaps one of the most traditional and well-known realms of art. From the earliest recorded history of mankind, there have been drawings. The art of drawing has progressed greatly through the eons, and cave paintings have been replaced by pen and ink, and later by computer-assisted drawing applications. A degree program in drawing will take students on a journey along this history of expression through images.

Animation brings together the fields of drawing and film to express a form of moving drawings that tells a story of some kind. This is another field where technological advances have produced newer, more efficient way of producing art. Courses in animation degree programs will help students realize this vision of combining a love for drawing with a passion for telling stories through moving images.
