A career in photography: BVSP-the right choice
Are you interested in pursuing career opportunities in photography, but are unsure of how to find the right school for you?
With many photography schools to choose from, it’s helpful to identify which criteria is most important to you as you narrow your selection. Part of the process is deciding what is most valuable to you, but you should also take into consideration what is important in the industry. Your individual goals are going to impact your search, but it is essential to consider factors such as infrastructure, location, opportunities, course options and more.
The photography school you choose needs to do more than prepare you for new career opportunities. It should provide you with quality academic resources, infrastructure as well as plenty of opportunities for you to grow outside of the classroom.
What to Look for in Photography Schools
As you try to determine which photography school is best for you, it’s important not to become overwhelmed. There is a lot to consider, but once you look closely at the information, the pieces should start to fall in to place. To help you get on the right track, we have compiled a list of factors to analyze when examining prospective schools:
• Location and Related Opportunity: Where a photography school is located plays a big role in what resources, inspiration and opportunities are available for students. Quality photography training inside the classroom needs to be supplemented with outside enrichment and stimulation. Students need to be inspired by their surroundings and to have great examples of quality work within their reach.
Bharati Vidyapeeth school of photography is situated in Pune, a vibrant & bustling metropolis and probably the culture capital of Maharashtra. With a massive student population, the ever growing IT industry, the presence of stalwarts like Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra, Infosys and the right mix of culture in it’s vibrant theatre, music & literary space, Pune has all the right ingredients to be the perfect location for a school of photography.
A 2 hour drive brings you to Mumbai, the capital of the entertainment & the media industry. It is also the capital of the advertising industry of the country. Oppurtunity abounds here.
• Industry-current technology: In order for students to become skilled in the use of industry-relevant photographic techniques, infrastructure, tools and technology, it’s essential for the photography school of your choice to have the appropriate resources. Up-to-date resources also help ensure that course material remains current. Bharati Vidyapeeth School Of Photography can safely lay claim to the title of being the most up-to-date as far as all the above are concerned. Our studios admeasure about 5500 sq.ft. in all with the master studio measuring in at an impressive 2750 sq. ft.
Students will use equipment from manufacturers like Broncolor lights, Hasselblad & Phase One high-resolution medium format Digital Cameras (31, 40 & 60 megapixel backs), Sinar view camera systems, Chimera lightbanks & Gitzo camera support systems, in their day to day schedule. Our digital labs are equipped with the latest Apple Macintosh workstations & Epson printers which students can use freely for assignments, coursework etc. The school has an excellent AV facility with a huge collection instructional videos, movies & documentaries.
• Course selection: Photography schools need to have a good selection of courses that adequately prepare students for success in this dynamic and competitive industry. Courses should offer instruction in contemporary photographic tools and techniques, visual design, lighting, digital manipulation and much more.
The Bharati Vidyapeeth School Of Photography offers a range of courses from 1 year Diplomas in Advertising & Commercial Photography, Fashion & People, Photojournalism & Editorial & Fine Art Photography. Besides these courses, niche courses like Wildlife Photography, Sports Photography, Contemporary Wedding Photography are offered through a series of 3 & 6 month certification programs. For the serious hobbyists & semi pro photographers eager to update their skills, the school offers weekend programs on the campus.

After Many Springs: Regionalism, Modernism, and the Midwest $25 After Many Springs is the title of a Thomas Hart Benton painting that evokes nostalgia for a fertile, creative time gone by. This bold new book––taking the name of this work by Benton––examines the intersections between Regionalist and Modernist paintings, photography, and film during the Great Depression, a period when the two approaches to art making were perhaps at their zenith. It is commonly believed that Regionalist artists Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood reacted to the economic and social devastation of their era by harking back in tranquil bucolic paintings to a departed utopia. However, this volume compares their work to that of photographers such as Dorothea Lange and Ben Shahn and filmmakers such as Josef von Sternberg—all of whom documented the desolation of the Depression—and finds surprising commonalities. The book also notes intriguing connections between Regionalist artists and Modernists Jackson Pollock and Philip Guston, countering prevailing assumptions that Regionalism was an anathema to these New York School painters and showing their shared fascination with the Midwest. |

Albers and Moholy-Nagy: From the Bauhaus to the New World $19.48 This beautifully illustrated book highlights the contrasts and correspondences in the lives and work of two of Modernism’s greatest innovators, Josef Albers (1888–1976) and László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1947). Beginning in the 1930s, Albers and Moholy-Nagy each developed a rigorously abstract language that condensed art to its visual fundamentals: line, color, texture, light, and form. This language experienced a creative explosion during their Bauhaus years, when both artists moved freely between media and disciplines. Essays by leading scholars follow the artists’ separate paths through to their emigration to the United States, where each continued to push tirelessly the conventions of artistic practice—Albers at Black Mountain College in North Carolina and then at Yale University, and Moholy-Nagy in Chicago at the New Bauhaus School and the Institute of Design. As highly influential teachers, Albers and Moholy-Nagy became important catalysts for the transmission of Modernist ideas from Europe to America.Spanning four decades and featuring works in a variety of media, including painting, collage, glass, moving sculpture, photography, film, furniture, and graphic design, Albers and Moholy-Nagy reveals for the first time the range of achievement of these two important figures and is essential to our understanding of the evolution of Modernism. |

Chapters: Joe Foss, List of American Football League Officials, Will Mcdonough, Lloyd C. A. Wells, Jerry Magee, Milt Woodard. Excerpt: Joseph Jacob “Joe” Foss (April 17, 1915January 1, 2003) was the leading fighter ace of the United States Marine Corps during World War II, a 1943 recipient of the Medal of Honor, a General in the Air National Guard, the 20th Governor of South Dakota, and the first commissioner of the American Football League. Born on a farm near Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Foss grew up in a farmhouse without electricity. When he was 12, he visited a local airfield in Renner to see Charles Lindbergh on tour with his aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis. Four years later, he and his father paid $1.50 apiece to take their first aircraft ride. In 1933, upon the death of his father, young Foss took over the running of the family farm, but the crops and stock were destroyed by dust storms over the next two years. He worked at a service station to pay for books and college tuition, and flight lessons. While at the University of South Dakota, he joined the Sigma chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. By 1940, armed with a pilot certificate and a degree in Business Administration, he enlisted in the Marine Reserves to join the Naval Aviation Cadet program in order to become a Naval Aviator. After being designated a Naval Aviator and commissioned as a second lieutenant, Foss served as an instructor at Pensacola, Florida and later attended the Navy School of Photography, at which time he was assigned to Marine Photographic Squadron 1 (VMO-1) which was stationed at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California. Eager for combat, he qualified in Grumman F4F Wildcats while still assigned to VMO-1 and was eventually transferred to Marin… More: |

Art Deco San Francisco: The Architecture of Timothy Pflueger $55 The Castro Theatre, the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Headquarters, 450 Sutter Medico-Dental Buildingthesemasterpieces of San Francisco’s Art Deco heritage are the work of one man: Timothy Pflueger. An immigrant’s sonwith only a grade-school education, Pflueger began practicing architecture after San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake. While his contemporaries looked to Beaux-Arts traditions to rebuild the city, he brought exotic Mayan, Asian, and Egyptian forms to buildings ranging from simple cocktail lounges to the city’s first skyscrapers. Pflueger was one of the city’s most prolificarchitects during his 40-year career. He designed two major downtown skyscrapers, two stock exchanges, several neighborhood theaters, movie palaces for four smaller cities (including the beloved Paramount in Oakland), some ofthe city’s biggest schools, and at least 50 homes. His works include the San Francisco Stock Exchange, the ever-popularTop of the Mark, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and the San Francisco World’s Fair. It is a testament to his talentthat many of his buildings still stand and many have been named landmarks.Therese Poletti tells the fascinating story of Pflueger’s life and work in Art Deco San Francisco. In lively detail, she relates how Pflueger built extravagant compositions in metal, concrete, and glass. She also tells the story behind the architecture: Pflueger’s commissioning and support of muralist Diego Rivera, his association with photographer Ansel Adams and sculptor Ralph Stackpole, and his childhood friendship turned to adulthood sponsorship with San Francisco Mayor James “Sunny” Rolph Jr. Beautiful archival photography mixes with stunning new photography in this collection of a truly Californian, but ultimately American, story. |
