How can I make home made lighting for still-life shots?

I don’t have the money to invest in actual photography lights or strobes. What can I do to make better lights for still-life photography?

The really cheap answer, Home Depot metal reflectors with clamps and incandescent bulbs.

Pick up 4 of them, with 2 100 watt bulbs, and 2 60 watt bulbs. 100 watts for product, 60 watt for background and highlights. You can make light stands with PVC pipe, make a square bottom, and then a center riser using 2 pipes. Support the riser with some T’s about halfway up. For around 50.00 you can make a decent setup.

Adjust the white balance on your camera for incandescent, check colors and adjust accordingly.

The aforementioned flashback was removed from the US release version of Black Narcissus so as not to offend the Catholic Legion of Decency.
